Friday Fact: The Titanic Was Lost for Over 70 Years!

  Most people know the story of the Titanic—how it struck an iceberg and sank in 1912. But did you know the wreck wasn't discovered until   1985 ? That’s   73 years   of mystery hidden deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean! The Titanic’s final resting place lies about 2.5 miles (4 km) under the sea. For decades, explorers and researchers searched for it. But because of the extreme depth and lack of advanced technology, the ship stayed hidden from the world. It wasn’t until a secret U.S. Navy mission (yes—secret!) that the team led by oceanographer Robert Ballard stumbled upon the Titanic's remains. Using special underwater cameras and sonar, they finally found the ship’s bow and stern split apart, resting silently on the ocean floor.
